Unions, China and the Smiley Face

It's been a while, been busy.

Wal-Mart wont allow unions in the US, but they will in China. How nice.

Yeah it's pretty funny isn't it? However, you can probably ascribe this to Walmart's unflinching aspiration to control their workers to the fullest extent. Sure, it's a union, but it's not independent. As Chinese people have no civil rights, and there is only one trade union in that sector in China, which is controlled by the government itself, the union has no power. If the unions want to strike they will either get "T-Squared" or arrested. Since the government runs it, and is buddies with Walmart because Wal-mart is making the Chinese bureaucrats quite rich, having some sort of semblance of democracy like the mock-union they have is in the best interest of Wal-Mart because it is a favour to the government. The workers will think they have representation, but the highly corrupt, neo-Fascist Chinese state will actually be asserting it's control. It's pretty similar to the Nazis, who formed a government union in order to satiate the industry bosses that were funding the Nazi regime by keeping workers in their place. Interesting parallel eh?
